Costa's Hummingbird- Calypte costae- L=3 inches Costa's Hummingbird is a desert species restricted to the far southwest and retreating just south of the border in winter months. The adult male has a metallic green back, violet-purple crown and gorget with very long side throat feathers, green breast. The adult female has a green back and crown, white breast, white throat with some black spots, buff sides, and white tips on outer tail feathers. Like all other hummingbird species the Costa's Hummingbird feeds on flower nectar and any tiny insects that it happens to find.
Interesting fact: Costa's Hummingbirds have a fondness for red flowers.
